‘Sand Dancer’, Ephemeral Beach Art by Peter Donnelly

May 16, 2009

I came across this remarkable sand artist today on Current.Com ( one of my favorite sites!) The artist is Peter Donnelly and he has been creating these beautiful masterpieces on beaches for over 10 years,  with hundreds of individual works completed.

Here’s another  video of the artist in action with more insight about his creative process :   http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=3535452n

As the tide rolled in and began to wash away his work, Peter said-

This is the beautiful moment. It’s symmetry, a symmetry . . . it’s finished now, it’s born, it’s had its life, and it wants to go.
And the ephemeral nature of it, you know, the — the fact that it is a gift to the universe and it’s a gift to that ocean which — you know, who knows what the ocean can take from what I say and what I give to it. You know?
…….

Phil(Interviewer) “It’s almost like a dance, it’s like you’re really connecting with where you are, like you’re really engrossed in the moment,”
Peter(Artist) “You’ve got to go through that . . . as an artist. There’s a healing aspect. I love this to be a healing, like, a love expression. . . I get emotional about it sometimes,”

Without money or tools an artist will create because the soul demands it.

Pete is coming up very close to doing his 1000th sand art. he is currently up to # 988 as done today, being 1-11-09 thats 1st nov-09, anyway i hope u don’t mind me contacting you.
    reply would be great please
I have also left you a message on yahoo messenger

Yes, You could send nzdoc a querie, shes on youtube, she is the director of the ‘sand dancer’ her name is Valerie reid, you could mention me as Riegan Crofts, friend of Petes. she will know who you are talking about, ask her for the screenings. I am certain she will give you the info.
Have you seen the latest one, called “sand man”? u can view it on my group.
I am also communicating with an art director, music producer, motivational speaker, in san francisco, This guy wants to get Peter to the states to do his art on the beach of San Fran, and Los Angeles, and then afterwards a meet the artist interview, media presentation, and questions/ answers event at an upmarket events centre…
